Yesterday I went back to the breathtaking Ossabaw Island on one of their day trips. I went with some good friends and about 25 other people. I learned so much more about the island; from the natural history to the history of the inhabitants. It was a gorgeous day out there. Starting at North End, we worked our way south towards the middle of the island; about 8 miles or so. The dirt road was surrounded by live oaks, palmettos and palms (and yes, they are two different things), oyster shell mounds called middens showing evidence of former inhabitants hundreds of years ago, and clearings that used to be cotton fields.
Our destination was Middle Place. Once a former plantation, now it sits somewhat deserted with only a couple buildings remaining. Massive live oaks seemed to engulf the landscape. We were able to explore all around the area. Let's just say that my childhood experience climbing trees came in handy. I had a wonderful time on the island and suggest that anyone who is interested in Georgia history, a beautiful landscape, exploration, or just a lot of fun check out Ossabaw Island. I left the island with a longing desire to return, some great photographs, and a souvenir of sorts: a splinter in my hand (acquired while jumping off a fallen tree).
